We are seeing an increasing number of national and local property management companies require their tenants’ to have a renters policy. The main reason this is occurring is that the landlords are seeing increasing property insurance rates in thearea and are looking for ways to keep their rates down. The benefit to the landlords for their tenants’ having a renters policy is that these policies include liability coverage with the contents coverage for the renter. This is usually $100,000 in family liability. In the event a tenant damages a property, the claim can usually be covered by the tenant’s policy instead of filing it on the landlord’s policy, thus keeping their premiums down. As for the tenants, they have coverage for their contents if there is a fire or other type of covered loss. Rents policies only cost around $12 per month, depending on the coverage amount.
